![]() The most important thing of any soulslike is the combat, and with how much the gameplay revolves around it, if it’s not good, the game’s not much better. In a game like this, that’s nothing short of a blessing, and hardening is something that you’ll want to master if you plan to give this game a try. Hardening is unique in that not only can you cancel any animation with it, but if you take an attack in this state, it will deal no damage to you. You’re taught the basic light attack, heavy attack, dodge, roll and parry controls early on, however this game brings something new to the table the ability to harden your entire body at will. It will kill you again and again, but that’s how you learn. It’s a game of few limits, in true soulslike fashion. Let’s begin with the elephant in the room this was my first steps into soulslikes, and respectfully, Mortal Shell teaches you that there’s no shame in selecting Easy mode if you need it, and you very well might. If that wasn’t enough, you also have a fully featured photo mode to play around with, and much with like Doom Eternal’s, you could spend just as much time with the photo mode as you could the actual game, with the environments lending as much to the game as the story does. Additionally, all story characters are fully voiced, adding yet another layer to its immersive atmosphere. This is underscored by an incredibly atmospheric soundtrack, which consistently will leave you on edge, wondering what lies ahead. Though no matter which settings you play with, this game will have you saying “Wow” as you traverse the sprawling world. ![]() The graphics settings are also plentiful, with toggles for motion blur and film grain, optimizations for Cinematic or Performance mode, and even a setting for “Indie Mode”, which amusingly gives the game a pixelated look reminiscent of a PS1 title. Presentationĭifficulty aside, this game looks incredible, the Enhanced Edition title becomes apparent very early on, with things like water ripples elevating the experience instantly. It brought to the table an amazing experience, and a realization that soulslikes are exactly as hard as everyone claims. ![]() My first venture into the soulslike genre funnily enough comes from a game that From Software never laid a finger on, and my first look at Mortal Shell made me realize that I still have a lot of learning to do.Ĭold Symmetry’s Mortal Shell: Enhanced Edition dodged its way into the Game Pass library back in late November of this year, and despite me never dying to play a soulslike before, I decided to pick it up. ![]()
